CHAPTER 19: SYBIL

"No, no, no," I say, frantically waving my arms. "Nope. I'm not doing it. I'm not calling Cora."

"Sybil," Ford says in his soothing tone that I know he puts on to try and cajole me when I'm being, well, like this. "Callum is right. If the mage were waiting on the shifters to come home, they would have made themselves known already. There is no other reason why a mage would do something this drastic, other than to bring attention to the Source. We need to call her. Or Holly will lose her mind and die. The shifters out there. They will die."

I pace back and forth in the living room, but the space is too small so I keep almost running into a shifter sitting on the couch or perched on a chair whichever way I turn. The room starts to close in and darkness creeps around my vision. I can't call Cora. I promised. Plus I lied to her. She'll be furious. I don't want to disappoint her. I can't.

"Sybil," Tate says, but I hold up a hand and wave a ward to silence him.

"Stop. Let me think for a minute."

Tate frowns, but settles back into the chair, opening and closing his mouth before giving up.

"Okay, okay," I mutter, resuming my pacing. "Pine Mountain is a town full of shifters. Hundreds of them. But no one knows anyone here is a shifter. It's a secret shifter town. Why did they all come here? What attracted them to want to live here of all places? And the wards. Holly put the wards on every building, every home, every street in this town to protect the shifters. But why? What purpose does that serve? And now every shifter is mesmerized, reverting to their basic animal self, but they aren't harming anyone, or each other. Just walking around doing animal things."

I bump into Nero on one of my rounds and his hand reaches up to skim my thigh. I shudder at the contact, stopping in front of him before giving up and sinking into his lap. He grips my waist, his nose buries into my hair breathing deeply. A sense of calm washes over me, even as my mind races. I continue my rant.

"Holly's been kidnapped. A mage violated the most sacred of Sight rules with Ford. My vision. I saw supernaturals who were not supposed to be born. Whose parents are not the same kind. I saw Janet and Harold die by an unseen hand and those beings were there. But they didn't kill them. They watched. And waited."

Closing my eyes, I try to recall the vision, every detail, no matter how small. But it's fuzzy now around the edges.

"Ford? Will you please come look at my vision? I'm having trouble remembering it." I snap open my eyes and find him standing in the corner next to the mantle, a troubled look on his face.

"Can he do that?" Nero asks, his deep voice rumbling in my ear.

I nod. "Yes, Ford can see my vision if I want him too.
